One of the things that I love about social media is the sharing of information.  Some of the information is sketchy at best but at other times, you find information that is very beneficial.

I saw either on Instagram or Twitter that people who have been furloughed or they are working from home due to the CoronaVirus are calling their car insurance company and they are changing their commuting miles on their insurance policy and saving bookoo bucks!

When I took my early retirement in 2018, I didn’t change the car insurance policy.  I called customer service of my insurance policy and they must be getting a lot calls about changing the mileage because they immediately asked if I was working from home or if I had been furloughed!!!

I told them that I’d retired and I’d like to change my annual driving mileage to 4,000 miles.  I saved a ton of money!!!  Mr. Man did not want to change the mileage for his car because he can be called into work at a moments notice.  I chose 4,000 miles because they told me that my commuter miles was 8,000 so I just cut in half.  Our policy renewal is due on April 12 and as some of you may know that I pay the car insurance in full once per year to avoid paying the $5 fee that insurance companies like to add to policies for making payments on the insurance.

I put aside money each month for car insurance and so when the month of April comes around, I pay my insurance in full.

If you are working from home or you are furloughed make sure to call your insurance company to update your commuter mileage.

Save those coins.

I did this as well. My insurance company, Amica, doesn’t charge any more to pay monthly than to pay annually so I don’t have to worry about that.

My car insurance charges a $5 fee for whatever payment plan you choose except for paying in full.
