How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies?

At my old apartment complex, there wasn’t much vegatation around there.  However, my new apartment complex, there are all kinds of trees and plants and now I am constantly getting these darn fruit flies.

It’s ridiculous!

Any suggestions on how to get rid of them?  I keep all of the fruit in the refrigerator and I contantly keep everything wiped down but the fruit flies are always flying around inside my apartment.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my gosh! I was just googling this the other day! They were driving me insane! I did have fruit out on the counter, though, so I put it in the refrigerator or tossed it and then to "catch" them I tried a variety of things… thinking each would work. Here's what FINALLY worked.

Take a bowl (nothing huge), and put some vinegar or wine in it (I used cooking wine-all I had but they loved it-juice should work too I think). Then put some plastic wrap over the top tightly. Then take a fork and poke it through so there are just a few tiny holes in the top. They will go through the holes by the smell of the wine/vinegar but won't be able to find their way out and will either drown or just get stuck in there.

As far as keeping the fruit flies away, I would try to google it. Once you catch them all, if they come back, you'll have to find the "source" and if you have no fresh fruit out I have no idea what it would be.

    Hope that helps!

OMG We have the same problem! I take trash out twice a day and keep everything in the fridge and they still come up! I hate them, they drive me nuts when im in the kitchen. I dunno if the trash bin is too close to our apt. But I send a letter to the manger and building management to mandatory that people keep the big trash bin closed! because i think they are just coming in to the house from there! I closed the tops every time im outside. My hubby is super clean freak so for him is worst. He cant be in the kitchen LOL

At my old apartment, I never had any fruit flies issues but here at the new apartment, the fruit flies are everywhere!!! I hate them.

Felicia, I'll try that bowl method but I have all fruit in the frig. I'll also do a google search on this problem!

Maria, I'm no where near the dumpster outside so that is why I think it's the trees and plants outside my apartment thats brings the fruit flies in.

Hi- The way I got rid of them was I put vinegar in a cup with a bit of dish soap put some water to create lots of suds. The flies will will get trapped in the suds and die.
    Good Luck!

maricasil, I will have to try the vinegar since this has been mentioned before by Felicia.

Wow, I didn't realize that so many were having issues with the darn fruit flies. LOL

I am not sure how to get rid of them, but I just noticed more of these gnat things around at dusk since we had the big store two weekends ago. I think it's just that time of year or the weather is more warm and humid maybe?

DMC, our weather has been unseasonably cooler this summer so maybe that's what is bringing out. I have not a clue but they are driving me bonkers!
