Money Matters

It seems like every time that I call out to the Universe that I need something to happen, God answers and makes it so.  I was kind of struggling to meet the $20 minimum to cash out my Checkout 51 account for January and out of nowhere, suddenly, the White Cloud deal came along, not only just once but twice and a $3 off White Cloud coupon, along with the Covergirl deal.  Amazing.

I have been dipping my foot into selling on eBay, although, it’s not like I have sold things on eBay previously because I have done so but I am kinda making a more concerted effort to do it.  Previously, I sold beauty products that I did use on eBay but then it would be another year or two before I would sell something else.  However, in December and January, I have sold on eBay.

I received $29.05 from Ibotta, $26 from Checkout 51 and $72.38 from Savingstar.  I also received a FREE Seventh Generation dish soap coupon in my mail box.

Below are my favorite deals in January:

FREE White Cloud toilet paper at Walgreens
FREE Covergirl
FREE Eggs and Walmart and Vons
FREE Oranges at Walmart
FREE Made In Nature Figgy Pop at Walmart
FREE Nabisco cookies and crackers
Money Maker Thermacare and Advil
FREE $1 Cakes, Cupcake, or Sweet Birthday Rebate
Cheap McCafe Kcups at Rite Aid
Cheap Maxwell House Kcups at Rite Aid
Cheap/FREE Dixie paper plates at Walgreens
Michael Kors Access Smart Watche for $159.99 at TJ Maxx
Cheap Flamless candles on eBay

I need to be more proactive. I still have my Angel that I told you about last year 🙂 I’ve never even bought something from ebay, I am so afraid to even try. But you inspire me!

I have been selling on ebay for 17 years. I did it sparsely at first but in the last 3 years I have made a huge effort to sell. The issue I have is that I really don’t make very much on it. It’s so competitive to sell things and ebay and paypal fees come out to 20% of your selling price including shipping costs. And the price of postage has gone up too. Lately I have been re-evaluating whether it makes sense given how much effort I put in to taking pictures, creating the listing and then going to the post office and mailing something to make so very little- sometimes just breaking even to increase my rating…

I feel the same way. I have only done it a few times but it always seems like a hassle. Then one time, I tried to sell deodorant and found out that it was going to cost a ton extra to ship them because they were sprays that I had to cancel the purchase. I haven’t been back on since.

Tammy, are you a big seller? Can you explain the PayPal fees?

I’m not a big seller. I sell things I get for coupons for free and I sell clothes I don’t wear any more.
Ebay charges 10% of the sale. So if you sell something for $5 and charge $5 for shipping, ebay collects $1.00.
Then paypal charges 2.9% plus $0.30 on each sale. So on the item above it’s $0.59
So even though you sell something for $10 and it costs you $5 to ship, you now have $5 and ebay/paypal collects $1.59 so you are left with $3.41 (and that is assuming you have repurposed envelopes and don’t need tape etc)
It takes about 10 minutes to take pictures, upload them and then it takes time to pack and ship and gas go to the post office. That’s a lot for $3.41
