My Trip to CVS 11/25 (Paypal GC Money Maker)

11

This transaction is not for the faint of heart or if you are on a tight budget.  To see if you got the Paypal offer, you can check online at My Weekly Ad under Household to see if you got a Paypal Prepaid Card wyb $150 get $50 Extra Bucks.

I went to CVS and bought a Paypal Prepaid Card for $150 plus a $4.95 activation fee and a $50 Extra Bucks printed on my receipt.

Then I came home and got on my computer and went to paypal.com/prepaid to activate the card and created a four digit PIN number.  I did not register the card.

I then went back to CVS and withdrew $140 (can only withdraw in denomination of $20), I did not realize at the time but I got charged a $1.95 fee when I made the withdrawal.

My intent was to buy Jif Peanut Butter, 2 Nabisco Chocolate Chip Cookies and Smuckers Jam but the Paypal debit card was decline b/c the $1.95 fee.  CRAP!!!!!!

I had the cashier remove one of the cookies and the Paypal went through.

I tried to call the 800 number on the card to cancel it but the customer service was already closed.  I will be on the phone to customer service first thing in the morning to CANCEL the card before it start accumulating any kind of fees.

So, my total out of pocket is $6.90 so a $42.55 Money Maker!!!!!!!  I still have $.55 still on the card but I am going to let that go.

The Paypal card acts as a debit card so you can go to the grocery store and buy food, pay your cable bill or whatever you want or you can roll it and buy the Gap, Old Navy or Banana Republic Gift Card at CVS and get a $25 Extra Bucks!

what sort of fees are there on this card that you were trying to avoid?

Less than in a 24 hours from activating $4.95 was charged from my card- this was a monthly fee. I did not expect to get charged so soon. So I ended up with 50-4.95-4.95 = $40.1 profit.

so by withdrawing the money from it right away you will have to pay a 1.95 fee, but will avoid paying the 4.95 monthly fee? does anyone know how to go about withdrawing the money?

I bought one of these a few months ago. After the load fee and the 1st months fee I was charged another monthly fee 3 months later.

I paid my Verizon and Comcast bills and bought an Amazon gift card with the rest. I called customer service to cancel. They said that all of the pending transactions have to post before they can cancel. I asked about the monthly maintenance fee and they said that they can’t charge a fee if my balance is 0. You can do the deal TWICE! Check the bottom of your receipt!

Awesome info janelle- thank you! I had never heard about withdrawing the money from it, Ms. B?? Would love to know more about that altho I should have just turned around and bought another gc at albies and gotten the $20 cat! $50 in ebs is a LOT but then again it’s free money so can’t complain! I would also love to hear what you buy with it.

Since I knew the card had some sort of monthly maintenance fee, I did not want my money tied up like that and it’s the reason why I withdrew the money ASAP. I plan to buy once of my perfumes, Gucci Guilty! 🙂

I just had no idea you could withdraw money. Cannot be done at any store or only a CVS? I asked for future reference.

Janelle, girl you are the BOMB and you did an awesome job of rolling that Paypal card! 🙂

Thank you! I think some of “my skills” come from being an auditor. I’m always looking for ways to save money! It really annoys me when people just think of me as being cheap. I live in Alexandria, VA. If I didn’t coupon, we wouldn’t be able to pay our rent!!

when I had called the customer service, she clearly mentioned that there will be two charges as soon as you purchase/activate. one is $4.95 (which we already paid as activation) and another will be $4.95 for maintaining the account from paypal. If the account gets closed before they put charge, not sure whether they can do anything about it else it would sit in your account and will go to collection agency. Since I got two contradicting statements not sure what to take.

So Ms. B in all you will only have paid the $1.85 withdrawal fee after initial activation fee? The only time I did this I was hit immed w that 2nd fee. At the time it was a $10 ebs so a wash. That’s why I waited on this but even a $40 MM is awesome.

As soon as I got to work this morning, I called the 800 number and waited about 10 minutes to speak to a real person. The fist thing the guy ask me “What is the reason you want to cancel?” without missing a beat, I said “I do not need to tell you a reason WHY I want to cancel the card.” I caught him off guard when I said it and then after a pause, he said you are right, one moment. He came back on and said your card is cancelled. I did not want to get hit with a secondary fee so I got out of that card ASAP. It’s a shame that folks that do not have a bank have to rely on these types of cards b/c they are a rip off with all the darn fees!
